Surgical techniques to reduce oronasal fistula risk in wide cleft palate repair: a systematic review

BACKGROUND Wide cleft palate is a common congenital anomaly, particularly in developing countries with limited access to plastic surgeons and specialized centers. It can be severe may contribute the development of oronasal fistula, which occur up 78% cases. Despite numerous surgical techniques for wide repair, best method remains unclear. This study aimed identify repair minimize occurrence fistula.
 METHODS Literature searching was conducted using multiple online databases including PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library. The keywords used were “cleft palate”, ” surgery”, “technique”, “palatoplasty”, “wide”. Inclusion exclusion criteria applied select relevant studies, quality assessed.
 RESULTS A total 12 studies discussed primary their outcome on fistula formation. included modified Furlow palatoplasty, two-flap Bardach’s palatoplasty. incidence 9.6% (n = 28/291) one-stage palatoplasty 12.0% 24/200) palatoplasty.
 CONCLUSIONS Two-flap (and modifications) safe low fistula.
